This was supposed to take three months, however, it appears that mounting public, and fishing industry pressure may be having an impact.

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

The coffer dam appears to look like a giant plunger. To stop the other wellheads, perhaps something more like a sunken battleship would actually stop the leakage. In terms of costs, Exxon was able to avoid paying for most of the Valdez spill. I would hope that basic moral accountability applies more in BP's case. Certainly the full costs will go beyond the financial, but "bill, BP, bill."

Excellent article on this dismaying situation. It seems so obvious that oil companies should not even be allowed to drill until they can demonstrate conclusively that they can handle situations like this. Since that's pretty hard to do, it means they shouldn't be drilling in difficult circumstances. There's been way too little oversight of the whole process. I wonder why!
