Schneider reports: "In the early morning on Saturday, July 28, three gray-haired trespassers made their way into a nuclear weapons facility in Tennessee. They were armed with human blood, hammers, candles, flowers, crime-scene tape and a Bible. In the process of their break-in and after, they managed to close down operations at the facility for days on end."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

It is not a mere metaphor. Those who demand the continuance of these weapons, as well as those who contemplate their use are, quite literally, NOT SANE.

Your proof of that is what? Other than your own misguided opinion, that is. Nuclear weapons are a fact of life. Only an idiot would suggest that genie can be put back in the bottle.

Keep in mind the world's #1 Nuclear power, the USA, has not used these weapons in 67 years. The USA has also been the driving force behind disarmament agreements. The USA has also been one of one a few countries to actually reduce their stocks of nuclear weapons. Has Israel, France, the UK? CHeck your facts before you allow emotional rhetoric to drive your thinking.

Nice...you just entered the wonderful world of cognitive dissonance there James Smith.

Your paragraph is one of the most facile nihilist statements about nuclear power and the human condition I have EVER born witness to.

So...'a fact of life' can also be claimed about the last 40 years of zombie killings such as the recent Colorado.

A 'fact of life' can be claimed for Fukushima generating electricity...ey?

You sir just stepped off the cliff of lemmings in to a pit of red herrings...how is that fragrance?

You miss one point...the effects of Fukushima CONTINUING to pour millions of gallons of radioactive water into the Pacific are now 'a fact of life' and I would also claim a probable fact of death to the largest ocean on earth.

You are an embarrassment to the higher cognitive abilities of mankind.

Brilliant! Three geezers (one, a fabulous 82 yo nun) breach the security of a nuclear facility. I think they've just taken OWS to a new level and should be an inspiration to us all.
Best news article I've read in a long time.

Congratulations to this group of concerned citizens. I hope their efforts inspire many to join in peaceful demonstrations all across our nation at these types of facilities.

Please note: All caps do nothing to enhance comments, rather it simply makes comments difficult to read.

How ironic that "Peace activists" choose a violent means to make their message known. The presence of the bible tells me why. Theists in general always think they are justified in using any means, even violence, hate, and bigotry to "spread their holy word."

While I agree that nuclear weapons are a danger to the world, unilateral disarming is not the answer. If the Islamic fundamentalist acquire a few nukes, the rest of the world must surrender to their will with no recourse but to die. Is that what these people want? Do they think that will be better?

Three thoughts for you to consider, James.

These three peace activists (no apostrophes) committed no violence whatsoever; that is part of what makes them admirable.

We may not care for much in the Islamic religion, but please recognize that in our times they are merely trying to hold the beliefs they have inherited . . . it is the Christians who have been trying to "spread their holy word."

"The rest of the world must surrender to their will with no recourse but to die." This is precisely the way Islam, and much of the rest of the world, view the United States, which does have, and has used, these weapons. Either we disarm, or they will arm . . . that is inevitable.

Peace.

The Islamic fundamentalist are not trying to "Spread their Holy Word?" they have been doing nothing else for over 1,000 years. Wake up.

oOu think invading a facility, spreading human blood, and putting up crime scene tapes while violating "No Trespassing" signs is not acts of violence? How about I do that to your house? WIll that be OK?

Quoting James Smith:

You need to wake up laddie. The Moslems or Moors who occupied Spain for 700+ years until they were pushed out by Ferdinand and Isabella's Catholic fanatics, were more tolerant, civilized and inclusive than any of their predecessors or successors, who imposed the appalling Auto-da-Fe (Inquisition) on all and sundry as well as sending out Conquistadores to rape and pillage the Americas for gold and glorification of the Vatican.
And then there was the more recent UK/US/BP ousting Mossadegu in 1953 Iran from which the formerly most cultured nation (Persia) in the Middle East and one of the most in the world, has never recovered and the west is now trying to contain the blowback.
Your perspective is typically American, narrow and introspective.
Go play with history books instead of fantasy cop scenes!

How do you know "Islamic fundamentalists " don't already have nukes? Some pretty scarey countries have nukes and have not used them. On the other hand, two countries that present themselves as benevolent and democratic have used nukes and/or radioactive weapons, repeatedly. The U.S. and Israel.

Quibbling over whether or not protesters are religious is a bit moot. The world would be very much better off if nuclear development had never occurred, but human beings are destructive. The good guys must attempt to stop the destruction.

You make a good point. No one knows for sure if the Islamic terrorists have nuclear weapons or not. All we know for sure is they do not have enough to accomplish their aims yet. They would need several so they could detonate a few to assure the world they had enough to hold everyone hostage to the threat of nuclear murder.

They also would need a delivery system. The nukes would have to be smuggled into the target cities. That's hardly impossible, but not that easy, either.

When has Israel used nuclear weapons?

+4 # Glen 2012-08-05 12:34
James, delivering a nuke does not necessarily require any more than some sort of basic conveyance and detonator, depending on where the target is. There was once a joke about a nuke being transported via Yugo. Shipping containers entering the U.S. are not inspected as well as most would think.

Israel has used DU bombs, as the U.S. has, as well as phosphorus and cluster bombs - all illegal, but they don't care. Radioactive materials, although not immediately causing death, will cause thousands, as in Iraq, through leukemia, birth defects, and all manner of other diseases, over time.

You are right. There is no real information concerning terrorists and nukes. There were thousands of various weapons unguarded in the U.S.S.R. when they collapsed. No record of where they are.

A deep sigh here. Coming world events will be ugly no matter what.
