Andrew Breitbart Anti-Occupy Film Screened at RNC With Heavy Police Presence

By Elizabeth Flock, US News

31 August 12

Tampa - Anti-Occupy film "Occupy Unmasked," dubbed the final work of the late conservative journalist Andrew Breitbart, was screened Thursday at the Republican National Convention to a smattering of Breitbart fans, protesters, media and heavily armed police gathered in a giant tent. The event could have attracted hundreds more, but the film's producer David Bossie said he was concerned about "fist fights in the theater" after his team was alerted to threats by Occupy protesters online.

Messages on Occupy Facebook pages about the film seemed mostly innocuous, but filmmakers said E-mails they received used more violent language. As a result, they turned away nearly 250 people who RSVPed.

The film, which was introduced by Minnesota Republican Rep. Michelle Bachmann and will be released Sept. 21, portrays the Occupy movement as mostly anarchist, characterized by rapes, robberies and assaults. Bachmann did not talk about Occupy in her introduction but praised Breitbart as a "dear friend," and called the film his "legacy."

Occupy Wall Street Plans to Block NYSE

By Sebastian Smith, Agence France-Presse

31 August 12

New York - Occupy Wall Street will mark its first anniversary this September by attempting to blockade the New York Stock Exchange and trying to arrest bankers, organizers said Thursday.

The social protest movement has seen a steep drop in support since its founding a year ago, when hundreds of people camped in Zuccotti Park near Wall Street to protest bank bailouts and what they called the ruling "one percent."

But activists promise to make a comeback on the September 17 anniversary, about six weeks before Americans decide whether to reelect President Barack Obama or bring in his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Occupy Seeks Answers From FBI in Lawsuit

By Phil Fairbanks, The Buffalo News

29 August

When members of Occupy Buffalo gathered in January for a peaceful protest in Niagara Falls, federal agents were watching their every move.

Even more important, perhaps, about a dozen police agencies stood ready to intervene if necessary.

The monitoring of Occupy Buffalo's New Year's Day event by Homeland Security agents is at the root of a new lawsuit seeking information on the extent of the government's surveillance of the protest group.

Twitter Fights Back to Protect 'Occupy Wall Street' Protester

By Kim Zetter, Wired Magazine

29 August

Twitter is standing firm against a court order to turn over user data related to an Occupy Wall Street protester.

The social media giant filed an appeal on Monday asking for a New York appeals court to reconsider earlier rulings ordering the social network giant to give the government tweets and account information on two Twitter accounts believed to have been used by Malcolm Harris. That lower court ruling came even though the government did not obtain a warrant to get the data. The lower court had also denied Harris the right to challenge the government request for data on his own, which Twitter asked the appeals court to reconsider.

The 99% Take On the Republican National Convention

By Arun Gupta, AlterNet

29 August

Despite mixed feelings about Obama, protesters fight Mitt Romney, the 'King of the 1%.'

Politics is an elaborate chess match, and in St, Petersburg one small strike was staged against the Republican National convention on Aug. 26 that revealed the thrust of President Obama's 2012 re-election strategy.

As panicky Republicans cancelled the first day of the convention on Monday because of Tropical Storm Isaac, the focus on Sunday was the "RNC Welcome Event" at Tropicana Field. These days no major convention event is complete without a counter-protest, and in downtown St. Petersburg nearly 500 people gathered Sunday to march to the sports stadium and voice their displeasure at what they derided as "the world's largest cocktail party."

Twitter Appeals Ruling on Occupy Posts

By Benny Evangelista, Chronicle News Services

28 August 12

Twitter on Monday appealed a judge's order that it turn over information about an Occupy Wall Street protester's posts, saying it will seek a court order finding that its users can fight subpoenas directed at the company.

A brief filed in New York Supreme Court described the grounds on which the real-time short messaging service seeks to overturn a June 30 decision by state Supreme Court Judge Matthew A. Sciarrino Jr. Sciarrino denied Twitter's request to quash a subpoena from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and said the company must turn over posts by protester Malcolm Harris from Sept. 15 to Dec. 30.

Greenpeace Abandons Occupation of Arctic Oil Drilling Rig After Workers Throw Metal at Them

Jeremy Hance, Mongabay.com

26 August 12

On Friday the head of Greenpeace, Kumi Naidoo, and five other activists occupied an Arctic oil platform owned by Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom to protest exploiting fossil fuel beds in the Arctic ocean. The action by Greenpeace was short-lived after workers began spraying them with cold water from high-powered hoses and then threw pieces of metal down at them, according to Naidoo, who communicated via Twitter during the civil disobedience.

"This threat affects us all. In my home country of South Africa we are now facing a far more dangerous climate because companies like Gazprom and Shell are pumping money into politics and blocking clean alternatives so that they can extract the last drops of oil left," Naidoo said after scaling the oil platform in Russia's Pechora Sea. As a youth, Naidoo protested against apartheid in his home country.

RNC Protesters Make Do With Tents, Tarps As Isaac Soaks Region

Rich Shopes, Tampa Bay Times

Tampa - Hunkered down in a tent wasn't the cushiest way to spend a night downtown, but at least it was dry.

As Tropical Storm Isaac soaked Tampa Bay Sunday night, a group of about 200 Republican National Convention protesters did their best to withstand the drenching, huddling in tents and under blue tarps next to the Army Navy Surplus Market on N Tampa Street.

From Voice of Freedom Park, Tampa, FL: Interview With Food Not Bombs Activist Nathan Pim

Lambert Strether, Naked Capitalism

26 August 12

Nathan Pim of Food Not Bombs (twitter) contacted Naked Capitalism because of the convention coverage we've been doing, and I thought that Naked Capitalism readers might be interested in hearing from somebody directly on the ground with Occupy about what's going on in Tampa, so I arranged to interview him. Once again, Stephen Malagodi agreed to handle it, and The Unknown Transcriptionist agreed to transcribe.

We edited the transcript very lightly for clarity. As I read along, and started tallying all the people Nathan's been connecting with, it struck me: He's a ... He's a community organizer, isn't he? I mean, not a fake one. In so many ways the transcript is one answer to the question asked by several contributors yesterday on this thread: What actions can we take? Well, Nathan's answer is to feed people ("sharing"). And actions that flow from that.

The transcript isn't brief, but there's a lot of local color and great detail from the ground that I haven't read anywhere else.

How Far Can We Push Our Freedom?

Alex Caraballo, The Minaret

26 August 12

"Mr. Chairman, my fellow Americans, my fellow Democrats, I proudly accept the nomination of our party." These were the words of Democratic Presidential Nominee Hubert Humphrey in 1968 Chicago, as he accepted the Democratic nomination for president to thunderous applause. What unfolded outside the walls of the convention, however, was complete anarchy as protestors rioted in a Grant Park that was barricaded with barbed wire fences and surrounded by a police force armed with assault rifles and tear gas. Chaos reined in the streets for hours as protestors hurled rocks at police and the police responded in kind with baton beatings and tear gas. In a report issued by the Mayor of Chicago, Richard J. Daley, analyzing the protests of the convention, it was listed that a total of 500 people had been treated for injuries and 152 officers were wounded. By all accounts, the events surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention were disastrous and were a model of a convention gone wrong. Thoughts of 1968 are clearly on the mind of convention officials as Tampa prepares to host the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Chicago: Occupiers of Mental Health Clinics Face Trial

By Kari Lydersen

17 August 12

Chicago - On Tuesday, N'Dana Carter and others arrested for occupying the now-shuttered public mental health clinic in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood headed to court on charges of criminal trespassing. The bench trial was postponed until October. Meanwhile, Carter's rage at clinic closings - and what they say about the city's priorities - continues to grow.

Six of the city's 12 public mental health clinics were closed this year and scores of union staff laid off, including disproportionately high numbers of Black and Latino workers.

Carter and others say the impacts on low-income, minority South and West Side neighborhoods have been severe.

DNC National Call to Action From Occupy Charlotte

Calling on all Occupiers and friends of the Occupy Movement -

At the beginning of September, Charlotte, NC will host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. The Democratic Party has chosen this "Wall Street of the South" as its rallying city despite North Carolina being one of the most anti-union states in the country and despite Charlotte being the home of several corporate criminals, most notably Bank of America, one of the mega-banks most responsible for the 2008 economic meltdown. Charlotte holds the second largest concentration of finance capital in the United States, the East Coast headquarters of Wells Fargo, the new home of human-rights offender Chiquita, and the home of Duke Energy, which recently merged with Progress Energy, making Duke the largest energy monopoly in the country.

Occupy Wall Street Protests the World's Richest Man

Occupy Wall Street and Two Countries, One Voice emhpasized at the event that, while there is solidarity between the movements, Yo Soy 132 was not participating in the event.

I spoke with several organizers and activists about how so much information could have been circulated, claiming Yo Soy 132 would be participating in the event, and my sources blamed miscommunication among the groups, though a report in La Jornada suggests the disagreement was actually of a political nature:

Occupy Santa Cruz Chalks in Solidarity with OccupyLA

Messages such as "Look up Plutocracy" and "Warning, No Trespass after 7pm" were added to the large area known alternately by local occupiers as the "Occudome Plaza" and "People's Plaza", where a large number of chalk messages were already written during a vigil the night before honoring attorney and sleep activist, Ed Frey, who was recently sentenced to jail for his part in a 2010 sleep protest at the Santa Cruz court house.
