Lieutenant John Pike, the infamous police officer who pepper sprayed seated student Occupy protesters at the UC Davis campus last November, has permanently turned in his badge, said the university’s spokesman Barry Shiller late Tuesday.

Last month, hundreds of indigenous demonstrators began dismantling a dam in the heart of Brazil's rainforest to protest the destruction it will bring to lands they have loved and honored for centuries. The Brazilian government is determined to promote construction of the massive, $14 billion Belo Monte Dam, which will be the world's third largest when it is completed in 2019.
It is being developed by Norte Energia, a consortium of ten of the world's largest construction, engineering, and mining firms set up specifically for the project.

The first systematic look at the New York police department's response to Occupy Wall Street protests paints a damning picture of an out-of-control and aggressive organization that routinely acted beyond its powers.
In a report that followed an eight-month study (pdf), researchers at the law schools of NYU and Fordham accuse the NYPD of deploying unnecessarily aggressive force, obstructing press freedoms and making arbitrary and baseless arrests.
The study, published on Wednesday, found evidence that police made violent late-night raids on peaceful encampments, obstructed independent legal monitors and was opaque about its policies.

What we are seeing today in Quebec, and particularly in Montréal, is a public moment of a much more ingrained movement that has been around for decades. If we use the rhizome analogy, we can better understand what is happening. A rhizome is like a root that runs underground: once in a while little shoots pop out above ground, and sometimes an enormous shoot breaks the surface. It is an analogy that suits the description of the anti-authoritarian movement in the province.

Since what is now going is being described as "the greatest financial scandal in the history of Britain" - the Barclays imbroglio - I have a question to ask. Where are those tents outside St Pauls? Or ones in solidarity this side of the Atlantic? Where are the vibrant reminders that - as has happened in the Barclays case - there is most definitely one law for the 1% (none, in fact) and another for the 99 %?

In a rather imprudent attempt at provocation by lefty commentator Alexander Cockburn on the Counterpunch site last week, he declares the Occupy movement dead, and then proceeds into full-fledged hissy-fit, saying of the movement: "There were ... features that I think quite a large number of people found annoying: the cult of the internet, the tweeting and so forth, and I definitely didn't like the enormous arrogance which prompted the Occupiers to claim that they were indeed the most important radical surge in living memory."

Some of the thousands of people who gathered in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Sunday for the annual induction ceremony into the National Baseball Hall of Fame no doubt visited the attached museum to gaze at items connected to memorable moments or the greats of the game.

DHS is not tracking Bin Laden cohorts across America; Department of Homeland Security is tracking Occupiers. BTW, reading keyboard strokes from space is very old cold war technology. Warrantless, DHS sees everything electronic done by Occupy, absolutely everything. Read Jeffrey T. Richelson (1990). America's Secret Eyes in Space: The U.S. Keyhole Spy Satellite Program. The book is old, but it gives you a sense of what satellites can do now, like recognize your face and positively identify you when you look up; when the satellite is further towards the horizon, you don't have to look up to have face-recognition software pick your face out of a crowd of Occupiers. Just think of the Hubble Space Telescope pointed at the middle of a crowd of Occupiers.

The ACLU of Northern California and San Francisco Bay Guardian on Wednesday filed a Freedom of Information Act Lawsuit against the FBI to find out whether and to what extent the feds have been spying on members of the Occupy movement.

Nearly eight months after police cleared hundreds of Occupy L.A. protesters from their sprawling camp on the City Hall lawn, officials are poised to reopen the park Thursday.
But while elected leaders have taken pains to keep the group from returning, recently strengthening rules against camping in parks, activists insist there is nothing to worry about. They say they've moved on.
Since early June, protesters have been training their cross-hairs on the Central City Assn., a downtown business group that represents local shop owners but also large corporations and banks. The association donates to local politicians and lobbies on major City Hall issues, from utility rate increases to the recent "responsible banking" ordinance supported by Occupy protesters.

Hong Kong - As global movements against capitalism go, the members of Occupy Hong Kong have demonstrated surprising staying power.
If ever there was a city where pure or considerably unfettered capitalism has approached its logical end, surely Hong Kong is it. The city is home to more billionaires than popularly elected legislators. It has more Cartier, Gucci, Hermès and Louis Vuitton boutiques than Hong Kong Island has hospitals or post offices. Buddhism and Taoism are the main religions here, but bank branches outnumber temples by more than two to one.
"In Hong Kong, if you don't follow the rules set by big corporations and big capitalism, you just cannot survive," said Tiv Wong, a young publishing industry freelancer who has been active in the Occupy movement.

LAPD Arrest and Harm More Artwalkers than Occupiers at "Chalk Walk" Los Angeles - Early Sunday morning videos surfaced online of LAPD violence at Thursday's Downtown LA Art Walk. LAPD pushed at least one unknown man, shot him in the chest at close range, then kicked him in the face while Occupiers were trying to help him, then the cops squish his face into the ground, then the cops arrested him.
As seen in a youtube video recorded from above, the man was clearly backing up from a line of at least 30 police officers. He turns and walks onto the sidewalk when a police officer pushes him into the street and other officer shoots him in the torso at close range.

Police used batons and non-lethal projectiles to disperse the crowd, which in turn threw bottles and cans at officers and chanted, "Whose streets? Our streets!"

Today, the Occupy Wall Street movement returned to Zuccotti Park.
“Occupy Guitarmy” protesters celebrated the 100th birthday of the late songwriter Woody Guthrie with a 6-day march beginning in Philadelphia, going through New Jersey, and ending in Manhattan. Today, protesters rallied throughout lower Manhattan, guiding the march to the movement’s original headquarters, Zuccotti Park.
There was an estimated 200 demonstrators in the park this afternoon.

Early morning, July 10, SWAT police forced their way into the Seattle apartment of organizers from the Occupy movement. The sleeping residents scrambled to put on clothes as they were confronted with automatic weapons.
The neighbor Natalio Perez heard the attack from downstairs: “Suddenly we heard the bang of their grenade, and the crashing as police entered the apartment. The crashing and stomping continued for a long time as they tore the place apart.”

Last month, President Obama raised a comparatively paltry $71 million campaign dollars to Romney's Goliath $106 million, and the reason is clear: the Republican candidate is backed by a coalition of Wall Street-humping super-PACs and shady figures like the Koch brothers who want to leverage their dough to take away the rights of average American people.
So yesterday, when Romney held a big, fancy fundraiser at David Koch's estate in the Hamptons, it was not only attended by wealthy donors-activists and protesters showed up, too. And the irony in this LA Times piece is so thick we couldn't have invented it:

Among the many things to remark on here in Montreal in relation to the remarkable student strike and the maple movement it has engendered is that people don’t seem to beat tactics to death. When new tactics have strategic uses that are underpinned by solid aims, and crucially, when they exhibit a bit of novelty or flair, they stay in play. On the other hand, when tactics appear to have outlasted their usefulness and especially their vibrancy, they are abandoned, reworked, or take another enlivening form.

On November 19, 2011, a group of DC community members going by the name "Free Franklin" entered and occupied the former Franklin Shelter building at 13th and K St NW. Protesting the lack of homeless shelters in DC and the city government's ongoing attempts to dispose of publicly owned property, the occupation was intended to put public resources to use to meet community needs.
Six of those arrested at the occupation are facing charges of unlawful entry. The Franklin building belongs to the people of DC and the Free Franklin defendants, who carried out the occupation to re-open the building for its rightful owners, should be found not guilty!

Twitter has been ordered to hand over almost three months worth of messages from an Occupy Wall Street protester after losing a legal challenge to prosecutors' demands for the tweets.
The micro-blogging website had argued that the posts belonged to activist Malcolm Harris and as such it would be violating fourth amendment privacy rights if it were to disclose the communications without first receiving a search warrant.

Earlier today, three of the five people who were arrested on trumped-up charges of terrorism during the NATO summit in Chicago last May pleaded not guilty during their arraignment. The National Lawyers Guild has called the case a clear example of entrapment, as the supposed terrorist plot was coordinated by police informants themselves, who had infiltrated the Occupy movement disguised as protesters. Occupy Chicago marched to the office of State Attorney Anita Alvarez to demand freedom for the #NATO5, other Occupy supporters who were arrested surrounding the anti-NATO mobilization, and all those held by the flawed U.S. (in)justice system. The trial for the three arraigned today has been set for summer 2013.

Reports are sketchy. There is a youtube video that clearly shows police fencing protesters in by holding their bicycles in front of them.
Twitter reports using the #NatGat hashtag report that a number of livefeed people have also been arrested. Tweets also suggest that the marchers were charged with obstructing a highway.

Wednesday, June 27, held a rally, march, and occupy of the Civic Center Post Office which serves many of the city's homeless. We gathered in solidarity to support the national June 25-28 Hunger Strike by postal workers in Washington DC. This movement is growing across the country to stop threats of eliminating 220,000 living-wage jobs and closing 3,700 post offices including four in S.F. The majority of post offices threatened are in poor neighborhoods and rural areas.
These job-cutting, service-slashing ideas affect people who depend on deliveries of medications, social security, and pension checks. Though we live in a digital communication society, the arrival of our mail is the only communication in the country that reaches everyone 6 days a week. This service is a public resource and these measures are steps toward privatization.
