At least two other police officers and one civilian also wounded in exchange of fire at house near Texas A&M University.

police officer and a bystander were killed and others injured Monday during a shoot-out with a gunman near a college campus in Texas.

The officer received a fatal wound after reportedly trying to serve an eviction notice at a home close to A&M University. The gunfire prompted college officials to issue a "maroon alert" to any students still on campus during the summer break, warning them to stay indoors.

A man at the address was also killed in the exchange of fire, while at least three others - including two law enforcement officers - were injured. The gunman was shot and later died, police officials said.

Assistant police chief Scott McCollum named the dead officer as 41-year-old Brian Bachmann. He described as a constable in the local force, and was killed after confronting the gunman at an address in College Station, around 90 miles north-west of Houston.

Local news reports suggest he was attempting to serve an eviction at the time of the shooting.

McCollum said that backup arrived at the home, by which time "there was a constable down on the front yard". An exchange of fire took place, during which two other officers were also wounded by the gunman. The suspect was shot and later pronounced dead.

The shooting led to officials at A&M University posting a message on its website shortly before 12.30pm local time, warning students and staff of an active shooter at an intersection close to campus. "Please avoid the area. Residents in the immediate area need to remain in their residence," it stated.

At 12.44pm another message was posted confirming that the gunman had been taken into custody.

Of the two other injured police officers, it is thought one was shot in the leg. Neither are thought to be in a life-threatening condition. It is not immediately clear if the two others shot in the incident were hit by the gunman's bullets or by police returning fire.

A female bystander was taken to hospital and was undergoing surgery on Monday afternoon.

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Maybe the answer is the opposite of gun control. Everyone allowed to own private nukes to defend themselves with, then the human race would stop messing up the universe because it would be gone.

If instead the NRA is willing to help form a commission to find compromises the following links might help,

I notice very few responces to this shooting. A personal note I was a process server at one point, it is the bottom rung of capitalism. Once your car gets vandalized or you get shot at one rethinks job choices. The bosses wife took all the easy serves and left me with the old and dangerous neighborhood work. Six months and I was ready for the cabs, anywhere besides spreading the news that capitalism had failed yet again. Some jobs are riddled with pain.

Yes, Cordley, I too, worked in the industry of kicking them when they're down; repossessions. One month and tthey payment, late, and they sent me, the new guy, to the military base or low income neighborhoods to use my wit, craft, tact, shrewdness to take that refrigerator out and back to the company to be resold. I was young, it was legal, but, I know now, it wasn't nice, and in most cases, wasn't right. The people in the, so called "middle" class and those below have a different perspective than the 1 or 10%'s as to how things ought to be; everyone should have food, shelter, employment opportunities, healthcare. There are many societies where this is an obvious understanding and reality. It isn't an obligation, it's an honor to help any of us who is in need. If that means the wealthiest are best able to assist the most disadvantaged, then that would be the natural way to accomplish that goal. We shouldn't need a law or cohersion. That would be Patriotism. If you don't actively work for your fellow countrymen, that would constitute treason. Simple. I have a theory, that if no one suffers, we would all be better off.
