WikiLeaks Publishes Syria Emails

he whistleblowing website says the first emails from Syrian political figures, ministries and companies were from August 2006 and the final ones dated March 2012, a year after the current bloody uprising in Syria began.

"The material is embarrassing to Syria, but it is also embarrassing to Syria's external opponents," said WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is holed up in Ecuador's embassy in London seeking political asylum.

"It helps us not merely to criticise one group or another, but to understand their interests, actions and thoughts," he added in a written statement read out at a news conference in London.

"It is only through understanding this conflict that we can hope to resolve it."

The latest disclosures could illuminate the workings of the Syrian regime and its interactions with allies in the run-up to and during the 16-month conflict, which the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says has claimed more than 16,500 lives.

The first wave of emails released on Thursday claimed Italian defence giant Finmeccanica continued to supply support for communications equipment to the Syrian regime after the unrest began in March last year.

The contract to supply the Syrian Wireless Organisation with high-tech radios made by Selex Elsag, a branch of Finmeccanica, dates to 2008, according to the emails published in Italy's Espresso magazine and by Spanish website Publico.

But Selex continued supplying engineers and assistance on the radios until recently, said the publications, two of WikiLeaks' media partners for the project it has dubbed "the Syria Files".

WikiLeaks said the 2,434,899 emails came from Syrian ministries including foreign affairs, finance and presidential affairs. There are around 400,000 emails in Arabic but also 68,000 in Russian.

The organisation is working with media partners Al-Akhbar in Lebanon, Al Masry Al Youm in Egypt, the Associated Press newswire, Espresso in Italy, NDR/ARD in Germany, Owni in France and Publico in Spain.

It has previously worked with media organisations including the New York Times and Britain's Guardian but these relationships later soured.

At a news conference in London, WikiLeaks spokeswoman Sarah Harrison refused to say how the emails were obtained, saying: "We never comment on our sourcing."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Well, we know the source wasn't Private Manning, at least not those emails from 2010 on. Manning has been in a virtual dungeon these last two years -- to our everlasting shame.

CNN Botches Effort To Refute ‘Syria Danny’ Propaganda Scandal

CNN’s attempt to refute claims that dubious activist Danny Dayem, known as ‘Syria Danny’, was caught staging sounds of gunfire during a recent interview with the network only resulted in further embarrassment, when Dayem admitted that the suspect video “should have been deleted,” presumably to hide the evidence of his propaganda stunt.

Following our exposé yesterday morning, which documented how Dayem, who has become the establishment media’s poster child for a military invasion of Syria, had ordered staged gunfire sounds to be made off camera during an interview, CNN’s Anderson Cooper invited him to engage in damage control during last night’s show.

Hillary: "The only way that will change is if every nation represented here directly and urgently makes it clear that Russia and China will PAY a price because they are holding up civil war and destruction of Syria?
- she should go to Tripoli and pray at graves of children killed by NATO bombs. It is pathetic that USA/I$rael bought ONLY one of the Assad friend so far and it is a news. With all the referendums it is obvious that Assad has support of his people - especially minorities (like Christians). Note that propaganda does not use "Syria people" much as it did in Libya. Stop NEOCONs proxy war on Iran.

It is Hillarious - USA bankrupted by militarism threatens to make Russia and China "pay" for backing the government in Damascus? China is paying US debt ($1 trillion +). Russian holdings of U.S. Treasury securities fell to $125.4 billion in April 2011 from $176.3 billion in October 2010 - Russians are getting rid of worthless $US?

It amazes me that some people see a difference between the atrocities we participate in and the ones we condemn.

Russia and China should return US bullying with some bullying of their own. Simply call in the debt; demand full payment immediately if the US does not get out of its dirty war against Syria.

Russia should arm Syria and even send military advisors and advanced weapons. The battle for Syria is the first front in what will be a war against Iran and Lebanon, if the US and Israel manage to win.

It is really sickening that no one in the western press is reporting the US-Israeli-Saud i-Qatari invasion of Syria for what it is -- a hideous crime against humanity.
