As GOP Guts Food Safety Budgets Foodborne Illnesses Rise

By Travis Waldron, ThinkProgress

ouse Republicans have gone to great lengths to block implementation of a new food safety law, while also trying to cut the budgets of agencies that oversee food safety. But new data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows just how foolhardy those moves are, as rates of foodborne illnesses are rising:

The most recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the rates of infections linked to four out of five key pathogens it tracks - salmonella, vibrio, campylobacter and listeria - remained relatively steady or increased from 2007 through 2011. The exception is a strain of E. coli, which has been tied to fewer illnesses over the same time period.

Foodborne illnesses sicken 48 million and kill roughly 3,000 Americans each year, and recently, a salmonella outbreak forced the recall of 30,000 pounds of Cargill-produced ground beef. Despite these numbers, the GOP budget made drastic cuts to the Food and Drug Administration in an attempt to prevent the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act, a law signed by President Obama last year that marked the first significant update to food safety law in a generation. The House farm bill, meanwhile, contains an amendment proposed by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) that would prevent states from regulating agricultural products.

Republicans, however, aren't necessarily alone in their fight. Obama also sought cuts to the Food Safety Inspection Service in his budget plan, and his administration has thus far failed to meet required deadlines to implement new regulations. "Everyone was hoping that this new food safety law would be in place and we'd start seeing improvements by now," Erik Olson, a director at the Pew Health Group, told the Washington Post. "What these CDC numbers show is that unless new protections are put into place, millions of Americans are going to continue to get sick from contaminated food."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

I don't eat much processed food, but I do eat vegetables esp. salad vegetables. I do my best to eat a healthy diet. Can't afford to live out of a health food store so I eat bagged produce from my local grocery and locally grown produce as long as I can get it. To all those folks who urge us to eat fruits and veggies and cut back on processed food: this is not as easy to do as your words might suggest. If we are REALLY going to eat healthy diets we need to change our farming methods and improve our soils that have been so damaged by chemicals. We need to take on agribusiness in a big way. Right now the American Grocers Assoc. is on the warpath to avoid labelling GMO's in Calif. And the Federal govt. is apparently supporting them. In all the yammering about our lousy American Diet, no one, NO ONE mentions the food industry or advertising to kids as having anything to do the problem. We need protection from food contamination but we also need a total overhaul of American farming practices and agribusiness. And we won't until parents and the entire public rise up and demand better quality food. Occupy Iowa anyone?

For me, this article represents another stunning reason why the entire 30 year long hue and cry since Ronald Reagan began it for evermore 'Smaller Government'.., Less and Less and Less Government as Panacea.., has become ABSOLUTE INSANITY RUN AMOK and is part of what is destroying our Republic and rapidly eroding our standard of living for all but an exclusive few.
PLUS, Why isn't this Neo-Corporate Conservative Talking Point and actual relentless political policy pursuit EVER challenged or even questioned by the media..?!
The ONLY thing Less Government has accomplished is the aiding and abetting of the largest transfer of wealth and power ever, from 99% of Americans to 1% of Americans. It been like a big ConJob Heist. The biggest in history and its still ongoing. Yet MILLIONS are going along with it even as it is eroding their standard of living. What? Why? Huh?
Its as if Smaller Government as pursued by CONservatives, now equates to a smaller America for most and more America for an exclusive few.
Just look around. Its right in your face.
Next time you hear a Republican knee-jerk their off the cuff demand for Smaller Government, ask yourself--What do they really mean by that?
As you read more and more about how the Government has more and more ways to surveil your life and corporations are contracted more and more to perform 'Government' Functions and see also that as We get LESS GOVERNMENT, Government cost more than ever.

Tip:
Go to your local health food store and biy a bottle of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide, and a eye dropper.
Be careful in handling it because it can burn skin.
Fill your sink up with water and squese 2 droppers full of the peroxide into the water. Then soak all your vegetables, lett uce etc. for a few minutes shake and use or store. They will keep much better in the fridge too. Ihis rinse is very good for chicken to. I actually tastes better.
Red meat will be OK too but is bleaches out.
This is a great disinfectant
Good Luck All

This is bound to happen when the Rethuglians are allowed to dictate deregulation. But it's no surprise. And there's even more to this outcome than meets the eye. See my commentary: "Caution: Belief in Creationism May Be Hazardous to Your Health (and Mine")

An Alternative to Capitalism (if the people knew about it, they would demand it)

Several decades ago, Margaret Thatcher claimed: "There is no alternative".
She was referring to capitalism. Today, this negative attitude still persists.

I would like to offer an alternative to capitalism for the American people to consider. Please click on the following link. It will take you to an essay titled: "Home of the Brave?" which was published by the Athenaeum Library of Philosophy:
