GOP Bill Would Eliminate Student Loan Forgiveness for Public Service

By Jacqueline Thomsen, The Hill

bill from House Republicans would end a program that forgives student loans for graduates who enter public service, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The GOP bill to reauthorize the Higher Education Act, introduced by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) on Friday, would eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which erases student debt for those who work for qualifying employers after making payments for 10 years.

The qualifying employers include government organizations and nonprofits, according to the federal student aid website. Those who volunteer for the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps are also eligible.

The Department of Education proposed eliminating the debt forgiveness program in its budget earlier this year.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has overseen the elimination or rescinding of several guidances or programs within her department.

The department has also reportedly considered ending other policies that would eliminate debt forgiveness, including an Obama administration rule that erased the debt of students defrauded by predatory for-profit programs.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Rep. Virginia Foxx is a traitor to Higher Education. She used her position as a community college administrator to get into Congress and onto education committees.

From these committees, she has used her influence to damage higher education and aspiring students with unremitting malice.

Footnote: she used to use the State of the Union joint sessions to get close to "W" and give him a big wet smooch on the House floor in the mingling that goes on afterwards.

I wonder if The Donald will be likewise honored this January.

It's always nice to hear from Ralph Nader. Here's his take on the GOP tax bill -- and the Democrats' failure to offer an alternative:

The 'Bublican pile of "CRAP" just keeps getting higher!
One wonders when, or if, those who voted for this mess
will ever wake up and understand and regret what evil
they have visited upon our country with their
thoughtless votes.
