Theresa May Hires Top Obama Aide for Re-Election Campaign

The differences between Conservatives in the U.K. and Democrats in the U.S. appear slim to none.

he self-described “mastermind” behind former U.S. President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012 is now the campaign manager for the U.K. prime minister that upholds neoliberal Margaret Thatcher’s legacy — Theresa May.

May has hired Jim Messina, a top Obama crony who also drummed up cash for former U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 elections. Messina also held consulting agreements worth thousands of dollars with the Democratic National Committee during the last election cycle.

In 2012, working in close proximity with the liberal former president, Messina managed to raise US$85 million for the super PAC that supported Obama’s re-election, years after he was named Obama’s deputy chief of staff in 2008. He was also instrumental in getting former U.K. Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron elected and was hired as a campaign strategy advisor for the British Conservative Party in 2013.

Since she announced the call for an early election last week, May has hired several key figures from the cadre behind Cameron’s 2015 victory, including Lynton Crosby, political strategist Mark Textor, amd pollster and digital media specialists Craig Elder and Tom Edmonds. During the 2015 election battle, Messina was credited with playing a monumental role for the Conservatives with targeted messages that persuaded people to vote for Conservatives instead of the Liberal Democrats.

May took over as Prime Minister after David Cameron resigned last year following the Brexit vote on June 23, when Britain decided to leave the European Union. Despite opposition, May has vowed to carry through with Brexit.

Opinion polls at this stage give her a strong lead in the upcoming June election. According to the latest YouGov poll, May is favored to win, with 50 percent of respondents saying they will vote for her, 36 percent of people responding they do not know who they will vote for, and 14 percent set to vote for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
