Romney Expected to Name Paul Ryan
As Running Mate

By Domenico Montanaro, Mark Murray, NBC News

11 August 12

hree different sources close to the Romney campaign indicate to NBC News that Mitt Romney will announce House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate at tomorrow's campaign event in Norfolk, Virginia.

The announcement will be in front of the USS Wisconsin - which just happens to be Ryan's home state.

With recent national polls showing Romney trailing President Barack Obama, Ryan is a bold pick. He would excite economic conservatives, and is considered one of his party's rising stars.

But his budget plan - which would substantially transform Medicare and Medicaid - is a lightning rod. In fact, Democrats argue that Ryan's selection marks an opportunity to highlight Ryan's desired changes to Medicare, which include giving future seniors a voucher or premium support to help pay for their health insurance. Under Ryan's plan, future seniors would have the choice of using the voucher/premium support to purchase private insurance or through Medicare's traditional fee-for-service model.

"We've spent 18 months trying to make House races about their plan for Medicare and Mitt Romney just did it for us overnight," said one Democratic operative.

Ryan had been the focus of intense VP speculation for the last few days. Washington economic conservatives - including the Wall Street Journal editorial page and the Weekly Standard - have pushed for his selection.

In addition, Romney told NBC's Chuck Todd on Thursday he was looking for someone with "a vision for the country," who "adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country" - a sign that he might make a bold pick in Ryan.

At 11:11 pm ET, the Romney campaign announced that it would be making its VP selection on Saturday. And as First Read reported earlier this week, the VP finalists were Ryan, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.

NBCNews.com's Mike O'Brien contributed to this report.

Wow! Double-Down on crazy, gilding the puffed up outer shell, while planning on further gutting inner workings.

Low end welfare (who still pay far higher % of payroll taxes (once 40% of revenues) plus higher portion of their incomes for all needs (food, shelter, transportation, health care, etc) seem to get about $9,000 for the 103 million people saved by that low end welfare. Most are honest and hard working people that become collateral damage when they “destroy the village to save the village.” The low end is limited by TANF to 5 years of welfare in a lifetime. No time limits for 1.75 million households making $250,000+ a year, high end welfare beneficiaries of $16.6 trillion in bailouts 1,054 times more than the low end. Look at sites like http://www.mybudget360.com/how-much-average-household-income-us-recession-income-distribution/ (which only shows distribution of income, not wealth) to see how uneven the benefits are within even the top 1.5%. Their income is already far higher, taxes far lower proportionally, and wealth accumulating even more unevenly. When will they have enough?

Even with all that special advantage they get, I don’t care how rich they get, I care about how hollow a country they are making, and limiting our potential to be a truly productive country that comes from a better distribution to producers instead of gamblers

Looks like the GOP is doubling down on its ideology. What we have is a vulture capitalist running with the Congressman who wants to privatize Medicare and Social Security. The one thing I will say is that the voters will have a clear but stark choice.

Oops, apologies for duplicating your "doubling down", I didn't get to your comment before I had the same thought.

Another thought that came to mind (independently) is that the Romney/Ryan team initials are "RR" forcing "Richie Rich" into my brain. I like the Richie Rich character better, though.

I have never understood how conjecture on the future becomes "breaking" news.
Be that as it may, if Ryan is the VP pick, will he give up his House seat? Or will he hedge, and hold onto it just in case Romney/Ryan doesn't quite succeed? Whatever Ryan does will be an indicator of how much faith he has in the ticket.

Mittens has just taken off his mask. This is the strongest argument yet to vote for Obama.

If you STILL think a 3rd party vote isn't a waste, maybe you need to take a closer look at the STARK differences between your more realistic options. If you didn't think there was a strong enough difference between Mittens and Obama, tell me...

What's the difference between Mittenes and RYAN?

At this point, the only POSSIBLE excuse for telling us not to vote for Obama is that you seriously want to destroy the country FASTER.

-15 # RMDC 2012-08-11 04:47
BB -- you may be right about this. Ryan is quite open about looting social security and medicare, handing those funds over to the private sector.

I'm against both Obama and Romney, but a Ryan VP may be the last straw needed to push me to hold my nose and vote for the murder in chief Obama.

Your last point is the best -- I do want to destroy the USA faster. It is the great poison in the world, source of terrorism, pollution, GMO foods, and capitalism. The sooner it destroys itself, the better for the whole world. Now I think I will vote for Romeny.

It's Soylent Green for the Baby boom generation
The Ryan plan is nothing more than a strategy for winnowing the baby boomer generation by cutting off health care for aging boomers. It's soft genocide directed at the most vulnerable. What do you expect from predatory capitalists born with silver spoons? America needs a serious realignment and radical redistribution of wealth. Reagan's legacy is the bane of civil society.

+25 # T4D 2012-08-11 04:42
Wiz, well written. The Reagan revolution is where this country just "ran off the rails." The "W" finally "drove the truck in the ditch" Congressional Republicans have dedicated 3-1/2 years to make our President fail. They care little if our country fails in the process, they still subscribe to the Reagan mantra, "Government is the problem." We need to call treason what it is.

+15 # genierae 2012-08-11 06:53
Well said, T4D. These Ryanistas are malevolent plutocrats, they have never loved this country, they love big, fat bank accounts, and all the things that money can buy.

0 # BeaDeeBunker 2012-08-11 22:41
T4D, you inadvertently made a very important choice of words in your description of what Republicans have dedicated 3-1/2 years. You said they want "our" President to fail. What they have been doing is trying to make "their" President fail, since he is President of the whole United States, period!
And if they, as you rightly gather, don't consider President Obama to be 'their' president, 'their' Commander in Chief, then the oath of office that they swore to, is meaningless. Their actions can, and should be considered treasonous.
But, what do you expect from them? They are what they are; the tiger cannot do away with its stripes.

0 # Billy Bob 2012-08-12 11:35
Here again I think you're choosing individual words to toss around in a way that misunderstands the entire context of the comment.

"OUR" President MEANT "OUR" President - as in ALL OF "OUR" President - INCLUDING those who are guilty of treason.

0 # brux 2012-08-11 14:18
I don't need the soylent green nonsense, but I agree with the gist of what you are saying. Our society should not be all about pretending to winnow out of the weak and unworthy when the people we see running things in the public and private sectors are the most incompetent anti-social abusive creeps that should never be given power over anything more important than the handle of their toilets.

+18 # Billy Bob 2012-08-11 02:04
At this point there are 3 options:

1. Obama (the FAR lesser evil)
2. Mittens / Ryan (the FAR greater evil)
3. Sitting by and doing nothing to prevent the greater evil

-1 # BeaDeeBunker 2012-08-11 22:45
Billy Bob-
Please explain to me how choice #3, 'doing nothing' prevents the 'greater evil?'

Your logic escapes me.

+1 # Billy Bob 2012-08-12 11:33
"Doing nothing to preven the greater evil" means EXACTLY the same as "not doing anything to prevent the greater evil".

Get it now?

If the logic of one sentence seems completely absurd, try thinking about it in the context of my entire history of comments.

0 # BeaDeeBunker 2012-08-13 11:52
Billy Bob-
I never said your sentence was absurd, partially absurd, and certainly not 'completely absurd.' I just said that the grammar and syntax was not logical. If you had put a comma after the word 'nothing' it would have made it clearer. Without the comma, it sounded like you you were saying that the act of 'doing nothing' was preventing the greater evil.
You might be interested in the quote from Edmund Burke (1729-1797) who said, "All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good people to do nothing."

He also said, "Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it."

I meant no disrespect to you or your comment. I was only trying to point out how important it is to make clear, not only what we say, but how we say it. You of all people should understand how lies, half truths and the twisting of words, is making a mockery of meaningful political discourse in this most important election cycle.

Do you GET IT now?

When you run a nation like a business, the nation will start to look just like a business. The mail room is grungy and depressing but the board room is always pristine, the floors in between are sectioned off tightly with no view, bland colours and very little privacy but the lobby is grand - only to make you feel small before you make your way to the elevator which is bigger than your cubicle and the dumpster out back has a padlock on it because lets face it, the trash is more valuable than the little folk are.

Every floor in a business should look like the boardroom but it doesn't. Why wouldn't an owner take that much pride in something regarded as his most valuable asset? Because other people will benefit from the beauty - that's why - even though it takes many hands to make a successful business possible. These same people who run businesses that concentrate only on the top floor and the lobby will run the nation the EXACT same way.

What incentive exists for them to do otherwise?

McRead- I wouldn't call it "powerful dystopic writing" but more likely a "reality check" of our future proven by the budget submitted by Ryan.

Throwing the boomers under the train to stand in Depression-era soup lines for medical care with their insubstantial "vouchers" and giving their hard-earned Social Security money (in some cases, 40 years worth) to Wall St. to play with in the form of 401Ks is a sure recipe for disaster for all boomers on the edge of retirement in the next ten years.

My mother (once an Editor of the local Mensa chapter newsletter) worked for the IRS for 20 years. The Federal Government has their own retirement plan, and when you leave, you can take the money with you.

My mother studied her market for a year, opened a business with her retirement money, worked 16 hour days, 7 days a week for a year, advertised in every appropriate venue, and STILL lost her business within two years.

The moral of this story is that ALL retirees need a safety net, as not everyone "gets rich" when working their butts off (9 out of 10 new restaurants FAIL, for example). So to those who think they could do a better job with their Social Security money, consider this a "cautionary tale".

And those who think that Paul Ryan's budget plan will do ANYTHING other than throw retirees under the bus, and destory Social Security and Medicare as we know it need more pixie dust to sprinkle on their Post Toasties.

This is the way the Republicans operate. Your statement that "...they do not want to be in charge," is the same thinking that they used in 2008. Eight years of Bush, and they didn't want to be in charge when the sh*t hit the fan. Let the 'black' guy clean up their mess was their thinking, and if he fails, well what do you expect from 'his kind.'
That's why they 'picked' McCain, the guy who fought Bush in the primaries, and who Bush had a Texas size dislike for. That's why McCain 'picked' Palin; not to win, but to lose.

Yes, the repeal of Glass-Steagall was huge, no doubt, but I wouldn't put THAT and that alone as the central reason we're in the mess we're in. Bush's two unfunded wars and his tax cuts to wealthy Americans have to be brought stage center. Add in Republican leaders in Congress insisting on extending these tax cuts to the wealthy and refusing to lift even a little finger to create jobs or help the economy and you have a more balanced picture of where we are today.

The problem is that people are often too lazy to vote and they don't realize that if they would all vote, their one vote could mushroom into thousands. Consider this a challenge to democracy. Join your local Democrats instead of whining and volunteer to take people to register and to the polls. I complained about W. for years and did nothing but vote. The second assumption you make is that it is a bona fide conundrum. It' a problem, for sure, but I'm a bit more optimistic this time given the increased 'smarts' of the now better informed citizen/voter through such venues as RSN.

"What SANE repuglican would run with Mittens" means that only AN INSANE one would do it, so "OF COURSE" ryan was the PERFECT PICK - since he's insane...

Get it?

Romney just committed political suicide.

-1 # fredboy 2012-08-11 06:17
dick, you are right on target.
The Dems, like fools, destroyed our nation's economic future, repealing Glass-Steagall and blocking all efforts to regulate derivatives, otherwise known as mathematical alchemy.
That's why this election is so confusing. Maybe we should just make the process simpler by only allowing us to vote for banks and big financial houses--they are the ones who seem to own our votes and the system, and most benefit from our votes.

+4 # Bill Clements 2012-08-11 08:47
For all the damage that was clearly done by the repeal of Glass-Steagall, if you honestly think there's no difference between electing Obama vs. Romney, then you're missing something.

GET AFTER YOUR "REPRESENTATIVE S" TO SUPPORT HR1489 TO RESTORE GLASS-STEAGALL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE TO SAVE WHAT IS LEFT OF OUR COUNTRY.

Well, it's nice to know, finally, what Romney's game plan will be in his run for president, just like the GOP Congress, Romney simply intends to double down on his quest to serve the corporations and the super rich! Ryan's budget decimates the middle class and rewards the wealthy. He couldn't make it any clearer who he stands with and what he thinks of the American middle class.

On one count, I can understand his choice of Ryan: the guy seems to have more of a backbone than Romney himself. In fact, Romney comes off more like a jellyfish compared to Ryan.

-1 # Billy Bob 2012-08-11 11:53
I don't think we can call Mittens a jellyfish any longer. With his choice of ryan he has made a strong stand against all of us. Mittens has spoken and we now know EXACTLY where he stands.

+1 # Bill Clements 2012-08-11 14:43
Yes, we know that the Romney campaign (and presumably Romney had some input :0) ) but my point is simply that unlike Romney, who has flip-flopped back and forth on any number of issues and is clearly a weenie, Ryan at least had enough cajones to take a deliberate stand on something (his budget) that he knew liberals would give him tremendous heat for.

Personally, I think Ryan represents the very epitome of the Republican worldview wherein selfishness is held up as the highest virtue.

+1 # Billy Bob 2012-08-11 18:06
My point is that romney can no longer run and hide. By picking ryan he has told us where he stands. He agrees with ryan or he wouldn't have picked him. He only appeared to flip-flop before because he never wanted to be held accountable for his true feelings. He knows how unpopular these ideas are. The fact that he's suddenly gone forthright just shows how desperate he is.

Agreed.

I can just hear the picketers now:

"MEDICARE KILLER! MEDICARE KILLER!"

Does Romney actually want to lose?

+2 # brux 2012-08-11 13:28
Please just consider what I have to say here.

Americans are so trusting of TV and Internet we let it into our minds uncensored and accept the "big" reality because we do not think such a broad vision can be faked.

1. Consider Hitler and his thugs took over Germany with newsreels, flyers and faked incidents that made people believe terror was the norm.

2. The media, owned by the right wing, is starting to really change in nature, and that even included PBS.

How many of us would grudgingly accept a Republican victory resigning ourselves to trying harder next time if the media told us with the right cues that Democrats were not turning out at the polls?

How many of us would get mad, because we heard that Republican's voter ID laws worked and kept people from voting, or that young people were de-energized, or whatever data we needed to fill in ourselves for us to perceive the reality?

What I am saying is that a lot of what we see as our national narrative is phony baloney, and eventually that is going to get bigger and bigger and expand to take over almost everything as real news sources get snuffed out like the last flame of a campfire ....

Just think about how do we know a small minority of thugs with literally trillions of dollars to play with cannot apply that money in the right places to create a suspension of our disbelief?

Thoughts?

Brux, there's an old saying, "you can fool ALL of the people SOME of the time, and SOME of the people ALL of the time but, you can't fool ALL the people ALL of the time"! As ee cummings so aptly said in one of his his poems, "there IS some sh*t I will not eat...". This is one person who will NOT be fooled EVER again and I know there are many more of me out there who won't be either! Just remember, never, EVER vote ReTHUGlican!

Point of Information, anglefish:

It was Abe Lincoln who said "You can fool ALL of the people SOME of the time, and SOME of the people ALL of the time but, you can't fool ALL the people ALL of the time"
Bob Dylan quoted old Abe in one of his 'talkin' blues' back in the 1960's. He added his own quotable invitation, which was, "You can be in my dream, if I can be in yours."

does anyone else think this is only "assassination insurance?"

paul ryan is worse than nixon's guy! spirew agnew or whomever-- the one who resigned as VP for... wait for it...
INCOME TAX EVASION!!!!

how desperate are people getting that romney is actually *close* to obama in polls?

im not happy w/ either of them, but im disgusted w/ the idea that americans cant seem to make ONE choice out of more than TWO options!!

0 # Billy Bob 2012-08-12 11:43
Mittens doesn't need assasination insurance. Our country only assasinates liberals.

you know, i'm hearing a lot about the ID laws making it hard for people to vote... as liberal as i am, i kind of find it hard to feel bad for people that can't come up w/ an ID.

after it became nearly impossible for me to walk, i became PISSED that only 11% of voting places are accessible to people w/ disabilities--

then i started voting absentee...

the majority of citizens in this nations are uninvolved, and while im the first to scream about the thousands of flaws in this "system," i also feel like calling people out who say, "oooo ahhhhh it's too HARD for us to vote... waaaaaaaaa!!!"

really? did anyone see pictures of people standing in line for MORE THAN 24 HOURS to vote in the first german election the year that they were reunified?

dragonflywings-
It's not that some people are too lazy to get an ID; it's more that the whole notion of voter fraud is a red herring. There is so much more 'election fraud' than 'voter fraud' it's ridiculous.
First off, the 50% of eligible voters who don't vote, don't need an ID. Secondly, it's the unfairness of saying to some elderly person who has voted at the same place since FDR; has signed the book every time since FDR; is recognized by everyone at the polling place, and addressed by first name, is now told that they can't vote because they don't have an ID is the real tragedy. Many people who were born at home, and not in a hospital, don't have a 'birth certificate,' but their birth is duly noted in the family Bible. To get a driver's license ID, one needs a valid birth certificate; the family Bible won't do.

It's the insidious unfairness of all these attempts to prevent a problem that doesn't exist; that only attempts to deny, deny and deny 'certain' people from voting, that is the issue here, not the inherent laziness of a certain few.
