GOP Turns on Michele Bachmann

By Matt Williams, Guardian UK

20 July 12

Boehner says remarks linking state department employee Huma Abedin to the Muslim Brotherhood were 'pretty dangerous.'

ohn Boehner, the leading Republican in Congress, has chastised his colleague Michele Bachmann over allegations she made linking a key aide of Hillary Clinton to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Boehner said on Thursday that the comments - made in a letter from Bachmann to the state department and Minnesota congressman Keith Ellison - about the family of Huma Abedin were "pretty dangerous."

He joins John McCain in rebuking Bachmann over claims that Abedin's father, mother and brother were connected to the Islamist group.

In her letter, Bachmann questioned how, given her 'family connections', Abedin had been given security clearance. Bachmann, citing foreign news reports, suggested that Abedin's relatives were known to be connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives or organisations.

This was especially worrying as Abedin's position "affords her routine access to the secretary and policy-making", Bachmann added.

In the letter, Bachmann wondered how Abedin was not disqualified for a US security clearance "given what we know from the international media about Abedin's documented family connections with the extremist Muslim Brotherhood."

Speaking on Thursday, Boehner said: "From everything I do know of [Abedin], she has a sterling character, and I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous". He added that he did not know Abedin personally.

Boehner became the second senior party member in as many days to publicly rebuke Bachmann over the comments. On Wednesday, McCain took to the Senate floor to defend Abedin. Without mentioning Bachmann by name, McCain described the attacks on Abedin, a Muslim, as an example of ignorance and fear.

"Huma represents what is best about America - the daughter of immigrants, who has risen to the highest levels of our government on the basis of her substantial personal merit and her abiding commitment to the American ideals that she embodies so fully.

"I am proud to know Huma and to call her my friend," McCain added.

McCain, who ran against Barack Obama for the White House in 2008, pointed out that Abedin's father died two decades ago, and that Bachmann failed to provide "one instance of an action, decision or a public position that Huma has taken while at the state department that would lend credence to the charge that she is promoting anti-American activities within our government".

McCain added: "When anyone, not least a member of Congress, launches specious and degrading attacks against fellow Americans on the basis of nothing more than fear of who they are and ignorance of what they stand for, it defames the spirit of our nation, and we all grow poorer because of it."

The furore around Bachmann's comments come a week after Clinton, the secretary of state, became the most senior member of the US government to meet with new Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader.

The White House is attempting to cultivate new ties with Egypt's new Islamist rulers following the removal of the Hosni Mubarak, the hardline president who was formerly backed by Washington, last year.

Abedin, the wife of former New York congressman Anthony Weiner, has been an aide to Clinton for more than 15 years, and currently serves as the state secretary's deputy chief of staff.

This woman is the one of the worst examples of Republicans in the House. She is actually a disgrace with her hairbrained accusations against Dems as being communists, and now against Ms. Abedin being a muslim out to do harm to the government. Bauchman should be removed from the Intelligence Committee at once. She clearly is not mentally capable of that position and is a danger to our government. She should also be forced to resign. If she were a Dem spewing the hate she does, the Rs would be forcing her out. Their double standard should come to an end.

She is my representative, hence I effectively have no representation in the House of Representatives . A total disgrace and she represents just how ignorant the people in this central Minnesota district truly are.

Unfortunately, not just central Minnesota or that would be easy to teach awareness to. Hatred is nationwide, with Political and Church leadership at the Hull

You watch Barbara, That Idiot will get re-elected by the other Idiots she represents - because she is cute. Stupid Is As Stupid Does, and there is a whole lot of Stupid out there.

+43 # Texas Aggie 2012-07-20 19:38
Actually she'll be reelected because a majority of the voters in her district share her mindset. My brother in Minneapolis tells me that her district is solidly right wing christianist.

If you remember a while back, a Minnesota school district got into trouble because several gay students committed suicide because of the bullying, and the administration did absolutely nothing except criticize the victims when they complained. Then after the fact, they tried to shift the blame elsewhere, and the rest of the community had no problem with the suicides. That was in Crazy Eyes' congressional district.

We could actually use a few democrats that were communists. Communists know the right way to look at international big business.

About time someone in the GOP shows a little common sense. Bachmann is a loose cannon and not worthy of any role in govt.

Considering what a nut bar Bacchmann is, it's a wonder that the people of Minnesota keep sending her back to Congress. The real scary thing is that no matter what insane thing she says, it always gets reported by the ENTERTAINMENT/n ews media, like she is some important person in American politics.

I believe Sen Weiner got thrown out for showing his, using government time.

Ms Bachman has broken the rules, now we have it in writing. Time to see the pen on paper saying Adios.
Funny how the Republicans turn when they are made to look bigoted. After all they are.

How fanatical of Bachman to take such an ugly hit for the team. But worth it. The message that evil Muslims are in our government is out there (check media comment lines and see all the commenters that agree with that). Boner and McCain have rebuked her and now look like they are tolerant. The anti-Islam, anti-Hillary, anti-Obama message is out there and GOP top guns get to pretend they are reasonable people. Clever. Sometimes they fool you by walking on two legs.

@ michelle:
Very cynical, very insightful, and I'd bet a bundle very true. This IS how it works. Suddenly, after 15 years of Abedin working for HC, Bachmann decided to accuse her? And McCain and Boehner decided to defend her? One thing I've learned from struggling with golf for 50 years; timing is everything. These wretched narcissists, loaded on their own egos and celebrity, all alumni of the Katherine Harris School of Media Preening, indifferent to the actual damage their off-the-wall pronouncements inflict on their targets and the public at large, are seeking one thing: the next boost to their Q rating, the pseudo-importan ce they derive from just being "in the news", let alone actually driving the opinion curve among their cretinous audience. I'd rather listen to paint dry.

I am NO fan of McCain, but at times he acts honorably. He did in 08 when that old woman said Obama was a Muslim. He stopped her, saying: "No mam he is not, he is an American, an honorable man I happen to disagree with." That was classy and so was his remarks about Huma Abedin.
I wish more republicans would act honorably. For we NEED a LOYAL opposition. We have not had that for MANY years.
Michelle Bachman is a disgrace and a nasty Bitch. Too bad so many people in her district share her feelings.

I agree with X Dane. John McCain's policies are sometimes at odds with my own, but McCain's service record as a POW and his chastising the woman who tried to smear Obama with the kind of smear that has become all too common, put John McCain in the category of "Loyal Opposition. Sen. McCain is a guy I disagree with sometimes, but he's an honorable guy. Damned few guys like McCain left in the Grand Old Party.

I agree to a point but we have to get rid of the Tea Party crazies if we want any attempts to change anything that will help the majority of the American people. We should not underestimate the ignorance and greed of the American people either. The lack of depth of understanding for our most vital issues is shocking. Too many people just don't connect the dots.

I could not agree more with you. We DO need to clean "house" and sweep out the T bags......BUT HOW can we do that when the voters are also T bags???

As for connecting the dots!! Oh my GOD. I am watching "Bill Moyer" He is interviewing Chris Hedges. Hedges is telling about West Virginia, how their state is being totally destroyed by the way the coal companies blow the top off the mountains and destroy the waterways, poison them with chemicals.

They write the laws in West Virginia. BUT THEY DON'T LIVE THERE.........A nd here is the ZINGER... the poor West Virginians VOTE REPUBLICAN. They don't even SEE THE DOTS.

Much of their state looks like a MOON LANDSCAPE. And it WAS very fertile soil.

sure, they will now turn on Bachman as she is an easy wing nut to disassociate from but how about Alan West's McCarthyite charges that there are 89 or 91 or whatever it is (reminds me of the Johnny Iselin character in The Manchurian Candidate) card carrying members of the communist party amongst democratic party congresspeople (if only it were true). Why do we think these repubs are now distancing themselves from Bachman...could it be that those, like McCain, that are now pushing for greater US military involvement in Syria don't want to muck things up with this kind of nonsense?

And why is it that only McCain and Boehner have spoken. Eric Cantor is usually quick to put his two cents in. Why the silence now? And where is Joe Wilson? And the rest?

Eric Cantor doesn't want to rock the boat. He is scared with good reason. 43% of the voters want to throw him out. 41% vote to keep him. I hope the 43% will grow. He needs to get out of the house. He is very. very bad. He is the one who undermined Boehner, when he nearly made an agreement with Obama in regards to the raising of the Debt Ceiling.
So we can thank Cantor for loosing our perfect credit rating.

True. Clinton is obviously also a co-conspirator, and to a lesser degree, so is McCain, Boehner and Bachmann. With so little information, one can only speculate what the truth might be. A likely scenario is that Bachmann was right and she thought she was playing party politics. But what she was pointing out was something that is common to the ruling class' representatives of both parties. Bachmann was publicly disclosing ties between one of our highest officials to a group that is, more or less, considered an enemy of the state. It is extremely easy to believe. Clinton considered Mubarek a family friend- until it became inconvenient. When they do the bidding of our government and the few it represents, they are our friends. Hitler, Bin Laden, and Saddam Hussein are a few of the more excellent examples. But examples are countless. Pick a country. Perhaps, Bachmann accidentally did something good for the people, but readers ignore the corruption she refers to. They seem to prefer remaining in denial about how corrupt our government, Clinton, Obama and the leading Democrats are. Now the denial has become so deep that Boehner's and McCain's words are taken at face value.

Thank you for making a rational comment. It seems that some of the disgruntled Republicans and mostly Democrats have found something new to vent their frustrations over, a matter which in the end is of little consequence.

It is obvious from the comments, that those so quick to offer up some fairly unlearned criticism, have little knowledge of foreign affairs and history of the Muslim (Mid-East) world.

It is easier to quickly criticize than try to understand and rationalize. Being offensive in one's comments is a waste and not an endearing trait.

vitobonespur: Just like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann has been publicly persecuted for a long time now, her husband ridiculed as a closet gay, and she has been singled out repeatedly by the left and called all kinds of names. I don't like her hateful behavior, but she needs to be treated with common decency and her congressional office needs to be respected. If she has lost her right to be in congress, then she should be held accountable, but if we stoop to the level of the right-wingers, then we lose much more than an election. As for the other letter-signers, they are also members of congress, and they need to be censured whether they are well-known or not. And who said anything about "attacking" them? Showing them up for what they are, and forcing them to answer for their hateful actions is not an attack, it's justice. They need to see the error of their ways just as much as Ms. Bachmann does.

Bachmann has always been a McCarthy wannabe, which is why I would say to her, like Joe Welch, "At long last, have you no sense of decency, madam?"

Are congressmen - or women - liable for libel? If so, why Michele Buckman and others are getting away with it? Is it parlamentary immunity?

THIS is what happens when you elect LUNATICS to the House and Senate! I'm surprised it has taken ANY of the ReTHUGlicans SO long to call her out on her inane and insane Bull-Puckey! Fanaticism of ANY kind is a dangerous thing but when it is given Air Time and taken, by some, as Gospel truth, we are ALL in Trouble. Bachmann, Palin, Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh are all very dangerous and recall the likes of Axis Sally, Tokyo Rose and Lord HawHaw. Congress, ESPECIALLY, should oversee their ranks for Nut-Jobs like Bachmann and keep her on a tighter leash. Remember in November and Vote them OUT! Never, EVER vote ReTHUGlican! The People, UNITED, will NEVER be defeated!

I do not know why we expected this bag of hatred to have changed her stripes. Her and her husband promoted hatred thru her campaigning.
The GOP are again trying to divert us to this instead of demanding the Romeny Papers. In the end I hope there is enough pampers for all of them, I include Democrats with the same base attitudes towards others.

If Muslims wanted to have us...they sure could. America is Lazy.

Bachman should at the very least get the censuring the female state legislator got for saying the word vagina on the state house floor. They (males legislators) took her right to speak and represent her constituents on the floor. Bachman's specious accusations have no foundation in fact making her nothing more than a wild eyed idiot who should not be allowed to waste legislators time.

Actually, I hope she wastes more of their time. The more time her Teeper squalleagues spend on imbecilic nonsense like Ms. Bachmann's oral Rorsachs, the less time they'll have to come up with and pass legislation that is actively and deliberately harmful to the general welfare. To paraphrase Sam Clemens, when the legislature is in session, no one is safe.

The answer HAS to be: Michelle Bachmann is the reincarnation of Joseph McCarthy -1950's "witch-hunter" of the then United States Senate.

Bachmann has long been notorious for being a fruitcake. In 2006 she put together an "education" conference of conspiracists in Minnesota where her invitee from the Gun Owners of Amrica claimed that mental health screening was a plot to take guns away from people. Another speaker warned of the "U.N. Curriculum in America's Schoolsw."

If only. If only Michelle Bachmann were merely crazy, or just stupid, and we could have a good chuckle on her dime. But this is not at her expense, it's at ours. Michelle Bachmann is all about hatred and racism and fascism counting on fear and ignorance to gain traction. She got elected on it, and holds an audience through it. This is hate, looking for a scapegoat, wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. Today it's six degrees of some made-up dipshit Muslim connection, tomorrow gays, the day after that "communists" (whatever that means). Michelle Bachmann is a godfearing, patriotic, goody two shoes brown shirt, brick at the ready to cast the first stone in a brand new Kristallnacht.

You're right chin...this bag of bile should be removed from office post-hast. I can only think the people of MN would get tired of her bullshit and unload her. She belongs in the landfill of McCarthyites. It's worrisome that she has any constituency at all. She represents hate and bigotry and gobbles up their vote like a glutton.

Michelle Bachmann saying crazy, lunatic stuff?? I am shocked!! What does a nutcase representative like her say about the people that elected her? That, for me, is the scary part.

+9 # CoyoteMan50 2012-07-21 07:47
She was a Tea Party darling who go elected. I doubt she will survive the her next election.
But she serves as the GOP's lunatic fringe during this election season

As I predicted Bachmann and Santorum and Gingrich would be back to stir up the Tea Turds, Evangelicals and other loonie toons like Joe Arapaio.
This is a Swiftboat type co-ordinated attack.
If you don't do something about it you will lose.
My prediction for you.

Put Michele Bachmann in a home for deranged republicans. She is slipping one mental cog after another - maybe she could retire from government, stick to taking government money for their wonderful, de-gaying therapy and go shopping for pantsuits together!! I'm sure Marchu can find some beauties for her at J.C. Penney!

Quoting lotuslover:
I continue to wonder why it has taken so long for "reasonable Republicans" to call her out? She has been making outrageous claims, without a shred of evidence, for far too long. And why is it that only McCain and Boehner have spoken. Eric Cantor is usually quick to put his two cents in. Why the silence now? And where is Joe Wilson? And the rest?

How do you know there is not any evidence? You just as well include all of Congress when it comes to outrageous comments.

Your comments on Texas and the "T bags" condemns a people not unlike what Bachmann has done. You are turning your words back on yourself.

CONSTITUENT: 1) A resident of a district or member of a group represented by an elected official 2) Servings as part of a whole.......... Lous Gomer was elected (is representing) a constituency that supports his views......Next time you pontificate please do so with some intelligence.

bmiluski.
Thank you very much for your support.

That really IS THE PROBLEM. So many voters full of hate send crazy hateful people to congress, AGAIN and AGAIN. Resulting in total gridlock. And we all pay dearly for it. Our country is going downhill. It is a tragedy

I am so tired of the hate-filled god-fearing people represented by the likes of Michelle Bachmann. Will someone please make her go away... far away as in to another land where she fits in. how about .. oh, I don't know... Europe in the Dark Ages?

Clever of the Republicans to mention this again and again. Each repetition reinforces the issue in the voters' minds. It doesn't matter that they're saying that Bachmann shouldn't have said this.
