Rich people are often philanthropic people, though many poorer people give as well. The wealthy by definition have extraordinarily resources and can easily give much-- though some only choose to give when it costs them little (tax breaks, etc.) This reluctance is more understandable in those of lesser means, is it not? There are many anecdotal examples of rich or important people-- both conservatives and liberals-- making charitable and humanistic contributions that you can find if you look honestly. "Heartlessness, " in the charitable sense I think you mean it, is not so much a product of ideology as extreme wealth. (There are variations of course.) It is almost always achieved through an obsession that isolates the achiever and shapes them to sympathy for particular (extremely hierarchical) social and political relationships. The maintenance of this economic hierarchy involves degrees of exploitation of others and (often unseen) misery for many. The acknowledgement that this misery is due to the system's vastly uneven economic distribution may be the first step toward really addressing the problem.

@Robt Eagle: What will you do when the Right further discredits itself (which ironically, is a positive thing)? So, I can accurately say you don't mind legitimate rape, among other Right-wing "proposals.?" I guess an Akin is more your type for "president." As for W (Witless), he's sure proof that the Right can be so wrong. He can, e.g., be blamed for a $10 trillion dollar debt that extended into Obama's term(s), leaving someone else to clean up the mess. How long will it take? That's a hell of a challenge for anyone, and the "bleeding" won't stop immediately, right? In fact, the "bleeding" not surprisely, has continued and will until there's the appropriate "turnacit" (wrong spelling) to clot it. Class warfare, race card? So, we'll add these to your conpsiracy too. Are you actually Lyndon LaRouche? Amazing how righties don't quite know how to use terms like this without their true meanings. For them, any bad word will do.

Timalaha, at what point when Obam's policies start to negatively affect you will you actually see the reality of it? The poorest in America and the lower portions of the "middle class" wil feel the upcoming economic destruction, they will feel it the most. Why do you think Obama will save anyone but himself and his cronies. He practices Chicago Politics at its worst, but no worries, you are so closed minded you will never see it coming. Worse yet you'll blame it on GW or the current Republicans. You really need to get your head into the sunlight and see what is really going on.

PGreen, If the tax was decreased, more of the wealthy would give increased amounts to their charitable concerns. By the way, it is pretty common knowledge that Conservatives give way more to charity than liberals...why is that? Oh, they actually earn money and pay taxes, while the take, take, take liberals give nothing back to society. Think it through, please...Conser vatives are NOT the heartless bastards you make them out to be. The most philanthropic people are usually the richest, take Bill Gates, for instance. Even look at Mitt Romney...he gave more than 10% to charity. Did any of the big talkers like Harry Reid, Pelosi, Obama for that matter? No way. How about John Kerry? What did that charleton give to charity? So check out the facts and realize that charity works better than government and then we would all feel better and have more to spend without the costs of the government administation costs added on top of processing out taxes.

For all the people here debating whether or not this is real, isn't the nice, round 80 figure a huge red flag for you? Since when would the statistical average from ANY legitimate survey be precisely 80? It also isn't written in anything even close to an intelligent, scientific manner, let alone being grammatically correct. ("\[I\]ntellige nt quotients"??) If it really isn't blazingly obvious to you that this is an inartfully-writ ten, semi-illiterate gag, you might be in that under-100 group they're writing about.

There are clear signs that this article is a fake. Most people don't even know their IQs, so how were the data obtained? There is no quantifiable measure of "common sense," nor does common sense have anything to do with IQ (I know a few geniuses who haven't an ounce of common sense). Nothing is said about size of sample or margin of error. None of the methodological criteria for a responsible study are met. Of course, it would be lovely if it were for real, but it's obviously not.

Good things you do, though I think that there are more noble institutions than the military; still I honor your/their intentions. The charity work is great. While I am glad that the system works for you, there are MANY people for whom, despite hard work and through no fault of their own, it does not. Private charity is simply insufficient to address such a structural deficiency. I don't think that you understand that, and doubt that anything I could say would convince you otherwise. But I will say this: Government at its best restrains excess, individually, corporately and within itself. It also provides a safety net. Most right-wing critics of government simply want to protect their own interests (including those people and institutions they identify with) under the guise of restricting government. Military institutions also function to maintain an economic hierarchy-- advantageous to those with the most influence, but not others-- even more than protect the national interest. The two are not synonymous.

Robt, it's this thing about living in a "society" where folks kinda look after each other. Much the way you're doing, though most folks aren't that good at it. So they "hire" the government to provide for the less fortunate. They also build the roads your son's truck travels, plow them when the snow falls, track the weather so he knows what's brewing, make sure your employees have a bit to fall back on when their days are short, hire those lifeguards you train. About the most honorable thing any government can do is provide for those who can't. That's much nicer than turning them into Soylent Green....

I dont need alot of studies to tell me Fox News viewers are low in the brains department. If they believe and spew all the crap and lies Fox news...I use the term loosely "Reports" then they cant be very bright to begin with. Statements that arent based on fact but on lies, hatred, and fear mongering are the Fox News way. A friend of mine today was trying to inform me of whats going on in the world by quoting Fox news. I finally couldnt take it and had to end the conversation because they honestly think they are well informed and tried to tell me its what they heard on MSNBC also, I knew it was a pile of manure and said I got to run talk to you later. This person is so sure they are right they wont consider any alternative thought or facts except for what they saw on Hannity's America. I said well I guess our views differ, because it just depends on what News your watching and said goodbye. Its horrible but I try as hard as I can to never talk about politics with this person. Their views are so absurd its hard to even try to discuss anything. As I have stated before these people are great people until you talk politics, they talk about such nonsense its even hard to follow their train of thought...its very very sad what Fox has done to dumb down Americans who think Fox is a fact based news show...its not!!

oldeftie, nope, not a southerner, born and bred on Long Island, NY and have been paying taxes since age 16, just turned 60 a week ago. Two kids in the US Navy, both graduates fo the US Naval Academy, oldest son a Navy SEAL who has been deployed to Afghanistan twice; my daughter is stationed out of Pearl Harbor on a guided missile cruiser, had already been three years on a destroyer out of Nrofolk of which 6 months chasing pirates off of Somalia and Yemen; my youngest son owns a food truck business in Rockaway Beach and just spent a month working for a non-profit feeding 500 to a thousand meals daily to residents, civil servants, and volunteers helping those who suffered from Hurricane Sandy. I own my own business with employees who are happy and enjoy their work helping others in our day to day operations. And you betcha that I am Conservative because no one deserves anything for nothing. I was out of my house at the age of 16, and have worked to survive and by diligence built a business. On my weekends for 39 summers I have saved lives on the ocean, and in the winter on the weekends I instruct skiing. I train youngsters to become ocean lifeguards, and they in turn have save many, many lives. Why should the gov't take our taxes and give it to those less fortunate??? That would be our choice through charity, of which I give plenty to those who I choose to give it to. Gov't isn't designed to provide for the less fortunate!!!

Remember Fox to a fake story from the Onion about terrorist training chimps to use guns to shoot American Soldiers in Afghanistan and ran it as a factual news article. When they found out it was a satire and fake they never apologized for running it and just acted like it was a normal day. Yet Fox viewers still think that was a real story. I asked a person at the bar I go to that was talking about the story "Where did they get the chimps from?" He gave me a dumb look and an even dumber one when I pointed out that Chimps live in a wet jungle type climate not a desert mountain dry climate like Afghanistan. But they still watch it because they are to stupid and unable to accept reality.

Whatever this turns out to be -and I've done my share of googling on't, the very name of the "institute" being a red flag, one thing I always try to apply -and this is just me, from personal and considerable experience- when measuring somebody's intelligence is that they have a good healthy sense o' humor including the ability to have a chuckle at oneself. The lack of such is a glaring characteristic especially of reactionaries and "more lefty-than-ypu" faux progressives.
I haven't done any research into the validity or existence of the group that allegedly did this 'study,' but it looks very bogus to me. A 15% deviation equals one standard deviation when measuring IQ, and about 85% of people have IQs higher than one standard deviation below the mean. Put another way, about 85% of people have an IQ at or above 85. So substantially fewer than 15% of the population have an IQ of 80. In fact, an IQ of 80 isn't far from borderline retardation. Fox News viewers are not the sharpest tools in the shed, surely, but they are not complete measurable retards, either.

The report above may not be legitimate, but it states what any truly intelligent person has observed. All those who watched Mary Matlalin on THIS WEEK this morning throw out big vocabulary words while lacking reasonable thinking to back up her claims, must have concluded that her purpose mainly consisted in trying to swat Paul Krugman down. This is an example of the above article's claim about [dumb] animals reacting to what they don't understand. The article got that one right.
