then why have marines there at all if they can't defend themselves? Why would marines defending the US Embassy start a war? As for owing money to everyone, it is Obama who has grown the debt more than any other president. In his 3+ years he has added over 5 trillion. So pray tell what do you want to use for money to teach out kids or fix out infrastructure?

Mr. Levy, you are speaking of the extremists that have taken Islam hostage and used it to advance their selfish agenda. I was making the point that Islam is in its heart, a true religion based on love and truth. This is not side-stepping, it is clarification. Those who mistreat women are not following the tenets of the Koran, they are distorting it for their own selish purposes.

Mr. Levy, I doubt that you are an expert on Islam, you need to do some research. In its essence it is a beautiful, loving religion, and it honors the freedom of the human spirit. I recommend two books: Essential Sufism by James Fadiman and Robert Frager, and The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks. These exquisite books tell the truth about Islam from a spiritual point of view.

HowardMH: Your attitude is the same as the one that prevailed during Bush's eight years, which got us into two unnecessary wars, and seriously strained relations with many of our allies. We lost thousands of young men and women because of it, and Iraq is destroyed, its people are suffering greatly, hundreds of thousands of them are dead. The burning of an American flag is merely symbolic, the suffering in the Middle East is real. President Obama has the cool-headed intelligence to handle this situation just right, he needs no advice from right-wing warmongers.

"Mr. Morsi brought up the American-made video attacking the Prophet Muhammad, which had set off the violent protests, and Mr. Obama said he understood the ire felt by Muslims, but added that it did not justify attacks on the embassy." Hello, people. That is the entire story in a nutshell. No matter how hateful and evil a book or movie might be, it does not give the offended party the right to riot and terrorize. "..many demonstrators said their main demands were directed at Mr. Morsi, insisting that he needed to be firmer with the United States if it failed to punish the filmmakers." This just shows how ignorant the Muslim demonstrators are about American law and culture. Unlike their world, America does not ban freedom of expression. . This is proof that Islam is the antithesis of freedom.

phantomww. Great idea, let's start another war, this time with Egypt. There will be few Muslim countries we have not attacked ...uh liberated, or threatened to attack in the Middle East. Are you getting your clue from MCCain?? he is itching to bomb Iran. Since our worn out military are killing themselves much faster than our enemy can. It is more than one a day?? So what do you want to use for army??? We owe trillions of dollars to Japan, China and others....So pray tell what do you want to use for money??? Our children are lagging behind many other countries and our infrastructure is crumbling!!!! GREAT IDEA...WE DO NEED ANOTHER WAR.
I don't know if a President Romney would have declared war on Egypt but I do know that a President romney would at least have had the Marines in the US embassy have live bullets in their weapons unlike what happened under the current administation.
A real problem as I see it is the taunting of the Muslim world by right wingers in the US of A. The anti-Arab/Musli m diatribes by red meat tossing Republican panderers have consequence. This inane film was not released by the GOP but such absurd theatrics are similar in nature to their rhetoric. President Obama has the right tone in his phone call to Mr. Morsi. He called them on heir bullshit & told him in certain terms to straighten up & fly right or the gravy train may come to an end. Would a President Romney have declared war on Egypt ala Bush invading Iraq? Pressure from the furthest depths of the far batshitcrazy radical right insurgency seem to have a direct line to to the mans ear.

Unfortunately diplomacy is a difficult dance. Because we want to PROTECT ISRAEL About 30 years ago Egyptian president, Anwar Sadat made a peace treaty with Israel's Menachem Begin. Before that they had been fighting each other. We have been giving monetary help to Egypt ever since. Unfortunately after the assassination of Sadat the Military took power and military dictators kept the power ever since The money we gave them were not used to help the EGYPTIAN PEOPLE, but was rather used to SUPPRESS THEM. That made the poor population hate us. The diplomatic dance became more difficult at the start of the Arab spring. Since we are a so called democracy, our hearts were with the population. And because of concerns for Israel and the alliance we had with Mubarak, we hesitated a bit longer than we should have. We worried with good reason, that the Muslim Brotherhood would come to power, as happened, and now we have the problems we feared.

#1. Egyptian president Morsi needs to explain that in the US of A we have freedom to be assholes and this movie is evidence. #2 The Muslims of Egypt AND Libya, NEED to KNOW that their actions only prove the filmmakers points of their hatred and violence. #3.Their actions are exactly what the filmmaker wants, because it proves his point that the followers of Mohammad are a violent bunch that need to be bombed into the 3rd century CE. #4 The film of storming the embassy is prime for use in another movie proving the violent nature of Islam.

Agreed futhark, it was very depressing to hear about this one...i think it's even worse for if i heard right the plank calls an "undivided Jerusalem" the capital of Israel (rather than just calling for it to be so) and means the dems have now abandoned any call for the return of East Jerusalem to Palestinian control...could be wrong but that's my recollection... truly sad to see the Obama administartion cowtowing to the most reactionary forces within the Jewish community here (the AIPAC folks) instead of the progressive forces that have consistantly opposed the Israeli governments policies and practices vis-a-vis the Palestinians in general and the Occupied territories in particular.

Surprised Obama didn’t apologize to all of them for our people getting in front of their bullets. How dare we stop their bullets and grenades. This whole mess would not even happen if we had a president with some balls and back bone instead we got Obama the Wimp. Diplomacy my ass, when one of them sticks his head above an embassy wall it is turned into mush. They don’t even get close enough to touch an American Flag much less take it down and burn it.
Don't forget that Mr. Obama is running for re-election on a Democratic Party platform that includes a plank calling for Jerusalem to be recognized as the rightful capital city of Israel. This plank was incorporated into the platform by a phoney voice vote, the results of which were already pre-scripted on the chairman's teleprompter.
