Perhaps the reason for high diesel prices are those indestructible engines that keep on truckin'. Not serious here. Rural folks who own diesel engine trucks are struggling to keep them but are reluctant to let go due to the endurance of the vehicle and engine. Many of those trucks are old, as your friend's '64 Mercedes. Yep. Time to move on, but there is that reluctance to cooperate, on the part of those pesky oil companies and governments, and car manufacturers.

It was merely an example of a particular incident, itchyvet. Heavy metals cannot be denied, however. Not all folks succumb to a body invasion of chemicals and poisoning. You are a fortunate one. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people are suffering hideously due to the same exposures you experienced. Some have children born with deformities thanks to their exposures in Vietnam. One cannot base studies and health issues on one's personal health alone. There are millions being exposed every day, and are definitely having damage done to their body. Who knows, itchy, you may have a disaster developing within your body now that may not appear for another 10 years. I've seen that, myself.

in 1985 I could see from an aircraft navigating towards Dampierre on the west of Paris that only the Eiffel tower, the Montparnasse tower and La Défense could be seen above the bubble of dirt that was covering the whole city. What a sobering thought.

The new really high tech diesel engines are cleaner than gas engines and a lot more fuel efficient. So they are good. But most deisel engines are old because they last so long. They just never wear out. I have a friend with one of those diesel Mercedies that Glen referred to. It is a 1964 with almost a million miles on it. Still runs just fine. It never has a problem. But it is not clean burning like the new ones. All oil based fuels are unhealthy and bad for the environments. Best to minimize their use. Natural gas is bad, too. Electric vehicles with electricity generated from renewable sources is the future.

Glen, come on mate, get real, I've been exposed to countless times such fumes, and so far at ripe old age of 62 have no signs of anything but osteoarthritis. And I also spent 13 months in Vietnam where they were spraying Agent Orange all over the place, breathed such exhaust fumes daily for three months sitting on personel carrier. The 30 years driving diesel powered locomotives. I think your really drawing one hell of a long bow, to connect this person's one or two time event as the cause of their illness.

Yes, diesel was touted as the new fuel, with better mileage. What a pack of lies. Methinks the oil companies are the worst deceivers for all time. Even Pharaoh and his people would be disgusted with them.

Remember when folks yearned for a Mercedes sedan with a diesel engine? Wonder where they are now? The price of that fuel is amazing. Heavy metal poisoning has occurred with many who live in cities and breathe that air daily. I read of a case of cancer resulting from two events in the life of a publisher: breathing the exhaust, accidentally, of a commercial jet as it made a turn on the tarmac, then breathing air through open windows as truck after truck drove by at night during his stay in Moscow. That account accentuated what I already knew about living in a city, much less breathing diesel. Any gas fumes can also ruin your liver.

if only... I believe we could move to electric cars but the our economic model is the very reason we haven't. In other words there isn't much profit to be made from electric cars, so very little will be done to change the system. We are stuck with this system until Power were to truly shift away from those who hold Wealth. The oil/gas system has it's claws deeply embedded in multiple industries from gas to pavement to plastics to fertilizers to healthcare to god knows what... it is a clusterfrack.

I grew up in New Zealand and I used to drive everywhere - in a car with a diesel motor funnily enough. I now live in London and I walk everywhere. I'm noticing more and more the noise and air pollution cars cause, not to mention the threat of being hit by one! In my last job I worked on the 20th floor with a window seat looking west. On a sunny day the smog made it halfway up the visible skyline! I used to make me think, "Man, we are walking about in and breathing that in every day". Time to stop listening to the car manufactorers and move rapidly to electric cars.
