Romney suffers from, ironically, a bad business model. The entire rationale for his campaign is success in business, and it’s a crock. 1. Politics isn't business, it's connecting. Bosses don’t have to poll favorably on the question, “Does he relate to people like me". But Presidents aren’t elected unless they do. 2. Government isn't business, it's service. We aren’t surprised if our boss likes to fire people, but as voters, we actually think of ourselves as making the hiring and firing decisions on election day. Be Obama a celebrity or anything else, Romney is a businessman — the one important thing he wants us to know about him. So what? The mission of government is to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare. The mission of business is to make a profit for the owner. On the natural, you wouldn’t want a businessman for President, and we’ve never had a successful one in that office. And finally, what about Romney’s so-called success in business. A lot of it was no more than looting. On that basis, Genghis Khan was in business. Romney never invented, built or improved anything. He’s leveraged things to his own advantage and often to the misfortune of everyone else concerned. We don’t need that business model in the U.S. As public policy, it’s name is supply side economics.
