| I am a mental health advocate. I am working to educate the American public on a very damaging and discriminatory Medicaid law that is partially responsible for people with severe mental illness becoming homeless, incarcerated and dying young. It is called the Medicaid Institutes for Mental Diseases Exclusion.
My twin brother spent over 20 continuous years in the New York state hospital system, only to be pushed out into independent living conditions which he could not handle. He was one of the lucky ones, however, as he was never street homeless or incarcerated. Yet, he died all too young as is the case of most people with severe mental illness.
